The Blue Tongues hope to put the brakes on a hot Ice teamA Must Win Weekend! | Howell returns home!

We travel to Melbourne this weekend to face the Melbourne Ice in 2 must win games. With positions 2nd to 4th all within one point, the team faces a big challenge after only securing one of a possible 6 points last weekend. The boys will need to bunker down this weekend against a strong Melbourne team that is sitting just one point behind us on the ladder. We played 2 fairly good road games last weekend in Sydney, however it seemed we were playing not to lose instead of taking advantage of our chances to win the games, something we will have to be much better at this weekend.

The team that will be required to dig deep and play smart, disciplined, finishing hockey this weekend is as follows:

Blue Tongues Captain, Ross HowellWith both teams dressing two lines, you know there would be a battle to the end.  Brad Smulders started the game off with winning the opening face off, and it looked liked the momentum was going to go with the Blue Tongues.  Yet, the Bears were able to get on the board first.

At 10:35 in the 1st period Vladan Stransky had a pass across the ice from Vlad Rubes giving Vladan the net to shoot at on Blue Tongue goalie Luke Fivash’s glove side.  The goal did not stun the Blue Tongues; within a shift the team was able to continue working hard in the Bears end.

The penalties began as Ben Maher was taken to the box for hooking at 5:55 in the 1st period.  Shortly after, Paul Shumak received an interference penalty on the face off with Brad Smulders at 5:35. This put the teams on 4 on 4 for 1:40 to go.  The Blue Tongues had several great chances to score while on the 4 on 4.  Chris Martin skated in alone after receiving a pass from Brad Smulders, yet was unable to hit the net.  As the penalties came to a close, Jonny Bale jump the bench too early and the Blue Tongues were charged with a penalty for too many men on the ice (Ben Maher served the penalty).  The penalty expired and the Bears did not register a shot on goal.  Yet, 3 seconds later Daniel Shaw of the Bears was able to jam one home after a swift rush making the score at the end of the 1st period 2-0, for the Bears.

Gold Coast local Jon Bale. The Blue Tongues hit the road after an 8 game homestead to play the Sydney Ice Dogs.  Playing with a short bench of two lines to the Ice Dogs three.  The Ice Dogs came out flat to start the 1st period, yet the Blue Tongues were unable to take advantage.  The Tongues were able to draw Sydney’s Andrew White in to a  hooking penalty,  with 1:13 minutes remaining in the 1st period.  With the Blue Tongues on the power play, and cycling well in the Ice Dogs zone, another penalty was drawn on the Ice Dogs this time to Brock Backus for hooking with 34 seconds left in 1st period.  The penalty enabled a 5 on 3 allowing the Tongues to finish the period off with a good scoring chance from a slap shot from Henrik Ivarrson that was saved by Jim Herbert.

The Blue Tongues entered the 2nd period with a two-man advantage.  Cycling the puck well, including three shots on the net, yet were unable to capitalize.  With a back and forward game in the 2nd period, the Ice Dogs were able to get on the board first.  Jassi Sangha and Brock Backus were able to produce a 2 on 0 while the Blue Tongues were in the mist of a change, coming in with a swift pass from side to side from Backus to Sangha to beat Luke Fivash on his glove slide.

Gold Coast Blue Tongues celebrate a sweep of the Sydney Ice DogsThe Blue Tongues swept the Sydney Ice Dogs at home this weekend in Bundall. After losing 9-2 on Saturday, the Ice Dogs came out firing in the first period of game 2, taking charge early and controlling the puck. It was scrappy hockey (which is common in Ice Dogs games due to their physical style of play), with a multitude of turnovers in the neutral zone. Goaltender Luke Fiveash was between the pipes for the Blue Tongues and also took a little while to find his stride on the ice. The Blue Tongues floundered a little until Marco Bertossa scored a surprising goal just under 3 minutes into the first period. With a little over 2 and a half minutes left in the first period, Scott Stephenson sailed the puck past Fiveash, and the teams headed back to the locker room drawn 1-1 without either team gracing the penalty box.

In the second period the Blue Tongues still seemed a little lost, and only 2 and a half minutes in Matthew Monahan put the Ice Dogs ahead 2-1. They found their stride 4 minutes and 3 seconds later when Trevor Walsh evened up the score, and 2 and a half minutes later, Captain Ross Howell, playing forward instead of his usual defensive position, took the Blue Tongues into the lead 3-2. Matthew Monahan evened up the score once more with 4 minutes and 15 seconds left in the second, but a minute later, Ross Howell scored again and took the Blue Tongues to the break with a 4-3 lead.

Double Hatricks In Blue Tongues Win PDF Print E-mail

The Blue Tongues dominated in a 9-2 victory over the Sydney Ice DogsWith veteran goaltender, Milan Novysedlak returning between the pipes, the Blue Tongues took to the ice to face off against the Sydney Ice Dogs in Bundall on Saturday night. The game started hard and heavy, as the Ice Dogs brought a physical element to the game straight off the puck drop. Just under three minutes into the first period, Gold Coast local Dave Upton left the ice with a lower body injury, and didn't return to the game. Blue Tongues import Brad Smulders was the first to score on Sydney's Jim Herbert just over two and a half minutes left in the first, to take the Blue Tongues to a 1-0 lead going into the second period.

Heartbreak occurred just over 3 minutes into the second period when Novysedlak was assisted off the ice with a suspected knee injury, having faced 18 shots in the game. Back up goaltender Mark Paulsen skated out to take his place between the pipes in a period that started with the Ice Dogs dominating for much of the first couple of minutes. Seemingly spurred on by the loss of Novysedlak, and finding their positioning in the offensive zone, Brad Smulders and Andre Selander put two quick goals on Herbert only 8 seconds apart. With a 3-0 lead, the Blue Tongues built on the momentum, when Trevor Walsh and Marco Bertossa also scored less than three and four minutes later respectively. There was only 102 seconds left in the second period when Smulders scored his hatrick, bringing the score to 6-0. The Ice Dogs refused to let sleeping dogs lie, however, and Shannon McGregor slid one past Paulson only 21 seconds after Smulders celebrated his third goal of the night to take the teams to the intermission at 6-1.
