Blue Tongues Look Sharp In First Inter-Squad Game

April 06, 2009, 07:09:28 PM by Wendy Hansen in Blue Tongues News.

In a scene reminiscent of Youngblood, the 2009 tryout squad for the Gold Coast Blue Tongues took to the ice in Iceland, Bundall in a cloud of natural fog for the first of the three Annual Inter-squad games.

Split into two teams (gold and navy) of two lines each, the Blue Tongues squad faced off in a game that assists the coaches in the selection of this year’s team. There were familiar faces from last season, such as Ross Howell, Ben Spillane, Jon Bale, Jack Connor and Chris Martin to name a few, as well as some new ones in Swede imports Andre Selander and Henrik Ivarsson and goaltenders Luke Fiveash and Mark Paulson.

This year’s team looks fitter, faster and a much more cohesive unit. While the Gold team scrambled on defense, the Navy side was a solid team, playing with precision, skill and great positioning - and a clear advantage of Coach Sands running their lines.

All in all, this season looks promising for the Gold Coast Blue Tongues – especially with the imports living up to their reputations so far!

To have your own sneak peak at this year’s Gold Coast Blue Tongues, game 2 is on at Gold Coast Iceland, Bundall on Sunday April 19 at 7.15pm.

Brad SmuldersBrad Smulders is one of those guys you watch play and immediately like them. A slick puck moving winger with an eye for the net, Brad has put up big numbers in North America and Europe.

Standing at 6'1" & 83kg Brad is a solid player who is known to take the body, battle in the corners and put the puck on net to help his team win.

His career stats are long and varied, but one thing runs consistently throughout... his ability to put the puck in the net. From his year with the Elgin Middlesex Chiefs (99/00) Brad Smulderswhere he put up 35G and 80Pts in 60 games to more recently where in 07/08 he played alongside former Blue Tongue Mike Gough for Amstel Tijgers Amsterdam and put up 20G and 42Pts in 24 games Brad has been a go-to guy in the scoring department.

Record Number of Imports Trying Out!

March 25, 2009, 08:30:48 PM by Dave Emblem in Blue Tongues News.

Never before in Blue Tongue history has there been such an interest by imports wanting to play for the Bartercard Gold Coast Blue Tongues. Three guesses why? And the first two don't count!!! Yes, Living on the Gold Coast is a huge attraction for our overseas hopefuls, after all who wouldn't want to be off ice training on one of the best beaches in the world!!

With a full off season of fielding email enquiries from all over the world at an average of 10-20 a week, Blue Tongue administration has ended up with a record number of imports trying out for the 2009 season.

This year the Australian Ice Hockey League quota of imports was reduced to signing six imports per team with only four imports able to play in a game per team. Keen to have most of the imports confirmed before the season, Blue Tongue management signed their first two imports back in December last year.
