Danny stewart's long road to the blue tongues
It's been a long road to the God Coast for Canadian Danny Stewart. The 22 year old hails from Prince Edward Island, one of the maritime provinces on Canada's eastern seaboard.
Stewart made his debut in the Q in 2001 for the Rimouski Oceanic. In 63 games, the 16 year Stewart recorded 15 points. The next season Rimouski, depleted of veterans won only 11 games with Stewart recording 40 points in 65 games. On a plus side, the first round pick the next draft landed the team now NHL All-Star Sidney Crosby.
The next two seasons were far more productive for the 5 foot 11 forward, who along with his team mates won the 2005 QMJHL championship, and recording a 28 consecutive game point streak (that's more than an entire AIHL season) before competing for the Memorial Cup. The Memorial Cup, the holy grail of junior hockey, features the champion of each of Canada's 3 junior leagues and the tournament host. The Oceanic battled past the Ottawa 67's and the Kelowna Rockets before falling at the final hurdle, shutout in the final 4 – 0 by the hometown champion, London Knights.
After the season, Stewart headed back to his hometown to play for the Prince Edward Island Rockets in his overager season. After a QMJHL career that included 105 Goals and 439 PIMS, the smooth skating forward jumped to the ECHL, making his debut with the Bakersfield Condors before being traded to Utah during the season.
This season Danny made his home in the United Kingdom, playing 62 games for the Basingstoke Bisons in the English Ice Hockey League. Fans of the team have described Stewart as a hardworker and one of the team's unsung heros, a do or die player with a high skill level who's benefited the team and ice hockey community.
Come April 19th Stewart will take his place on the ice for the Bluetongues, and hopefully make an impact for the Gold Coast as he has elsewhere in his travels.
