Post Game Recap - 28 & 29 June

This weekend’s double header against the Central Coast Rhinos opened on Saturday with a disciplined effort from the Blue Tongues. Though Gold Coast had the least number of penalties in a game than ever before, their inability to get the puck past Rhinos’ goaltender, Marcus Cleeson, caused the team to be shutout 2-0.  The Blue Tongues, while disciplined, seemed a little flat in their performance, with fewer hard checks and intensity than fans are used to seeing.

On Sunday, however, the Blue Tongues hit back from their shutout loss, and hit back hard. Gaetan Royer scored the team’s first goal on a penalty shot, and followed it up with a natural hatrick, to end the first period 4-0. Gaetan continued to lead the Blue Tongues in scoring, opening their goal tally again in the second period. The Rhinos started to hit back, both on the ice and the scoreboard, but left their goal run a little too late in the game. Gold Coast goaltender Simo Mustonen, only letting in 1 goal from 12 shots, pulled himself after the Blue Tongues scored their 7th goal of the game to give backup goalie CJ Anderson some ice time.

The game was riddled with missed calls for both sides, and at one point the referees awarded a goal after the siren had rung signaling the end of the second period – causing uproar among the crowd and on the benches of both teams. The goal was disallowed, but that didn’t stop the Rhinos from opening the scoring in the third period. The game finished in a Blue Tongues victory 9-4.
